Founded in 1832, The Royal is one of the most historic hotels on the Isle of Wight, and one of its finest to this day. Originally built as a coaching inn called Fishers Hotel, it became known as The Royal Hotel after enjoying Queen Victoria's patronage.

It was named The Beautiful South's Restaurant of the Year (Silver) in 2024, judged to be the second best restaurant in the South of England. Afternoon tea is a sacrosanct tradition at The Royal, ever since Queen Victoria enjoyed taking some afternoon refreshment at the hotel when visiting Ventnor.
