This short walk takes you to Bierley Waterfall and on into Wydcombe Park. Whilst the National Trust owns and manages the Wydcombe estate, it is not a visitor attraction, but a public footpath goes through it.
PARKING - there is no carpark, so you need to park on the road. A place that some people use is by the side of Newport Road at Bierley - see link below - but there is only space for a couple of cars. Alternatively, you could park in Niton village and walk up Newport Road.
BIERLEY WATERFALL
The walk starts by visiting Bierley Waterfall, which is best viewed after a period or rain rather than during a summer drought.
Head for the footpath signposted NT86 'Wydcombe 1/3'. This sign is visible from the main road.
The footpath will take you northwest across a field, so skirt around the edge of the field as best you can. You will find a wooden stile by a stream, and the waterfall is over to the left. The stream will be too deep to walk through, so carefully walk along the muddy bank for a better view.
Depending on what the weather's been like in the preceding days, the waterfall could be anything from a trickle, to gushing with gusto. It is a small waterfall, so don't expect it to be as impressive as the big waterfalls you might find in Wales or Yorkshire.
WYDCOMBE PARK
Continue along the NT86 footpath and at the junction, take the NT85. Wydcombe is a landscaped park and walled flower garden developed from the mid-19th-century on an earlier site. The property on your left is Wydcombe Cottage, a holiday let you can rent from the National Trust. The one on the right is Wydcombe Manor, privately occupied. A large ornamental pond is close by and a stream meanders thorough the site.
Continue along the footpath (track) and you will eventually come out on Newport Road again, by Wydcombe Lodge, also privately occupied.
At this point, turn back and retrace your steps back to the beginning.
