“Stokey” is a locally based ocean sailor who has crossed the Atlantic more than 30 times. A much respected teacher in celestial navigation, Stokey now lives in Ventnor and is keen to share his love of the heavens with locals and visitors.
The Solar Walk (self guided)
Follow the plaques Supported by Ventnor Enhancement that mark out the distances between the planets to scale, each one bearing some interesting facts. The walk is laid out based on the 1,000-yard model, where one inch represents 100,000 miles.
You can park in the Shore Road carpark, and walk down Shore Road until you reach Bonchurch Pottery. The first marker - an orange sphere representing The Sun - will be found close-by fixed to the seawall railings. There is a plaque with it explaining how many paces you then need to take to get to the next plaque, Mercury. Head West towards Ventnor. Once the walk is completed you will have walked a total of 1,019 paces passing all the planets from Mercury to Pluto, the equivalent to 3,666,000,000 miles!
This is great for couples and families. It is a one-way walk. You can either turn round and go back the way you came, or continue on into Ventnor.
