This is a 10 mile linear walk from outside Ventnor Botanic Garden to Shide near Newport and will take you 3 - 4 hours. It is moderately difficult but you can stop along the way for a rest and refreshments.
The trail follows bridleways along the river valley from Ventnor, rising up and over Week Down, Stenbury Down, and Appuldurcombe Down, before descending and finishing at Shide near Newport. It involves a decent climb but you will be rewarded with fabulous views of the Island and coast in all directions.
You will pass close to the pretty village of Godshill, with its thatched cottages, and also the English Heritage owned Appuldurcombe House. These are both a short detour off the trail, but are well worth visiting if you have the additional time.
The map in the PDF link below describes the route in reverse order, from Newport to Ventnor, so obviously follow this in reverse order.
NOTE: Taking the Ventnor to Newport direction is more challenging due to the initial steep ascent over the downs, so do it from Newport to Ventnor if you prefer. You can catch the Number 3 Vectis bus from Ventnor town centre (outside Boots) to Shide, which takes about 40 minutes. THE BARLEY MOW PUB AT SHIDE IS PERMANENTLY CLOSED.
