Qigong is a traditional Chinese practice that combines physical postures, breathing techniques, and mental focus to cultivate and balance the body's vital energy, known as "qi" or "chi." The word "qi" translates to "life energy" or "vital energy," and "gong" means "work" or "skill cultivated through steady practice."
In Qigong practice, practitioners engage in slow, deliberate movements, often accompanied by deep breathing and visualisation exercises. These movements are designed to stimulate the flow of qi throughout the body's energy channels or meridians, promoting health, vitality, and relaxation.
There are many different styles and forms of Qigong, ranging from gentle, meditative movements to more dynamic and martial arts-inspired techniques. Some Qigong practices focus on specific aspects of health, such as improving flexibility, boosting immunity, or enhancing mental clarity, while others are more holistic, aiming to harmonise the body, mind, and spirit.
Overall, Qigong is a holistic mind-body practice that has been used for centuries in China and other parts of East Asia to promote health, longevity, and spiritual development. It is often practiced alongside other traditional Chinese medicine modalities, such as acupuncture and herbal medicine, as part of a comprehensive approach to wellness.
