Flowers Brook Meadow is the only remaining coastal meadow in Ventnor, on the South Coast of the Isle of Wight. It was once part of the Steephill Castle Estate before being sold to Ventnor Urban District Council in 1919 for £450. At one time, the area incorporated a putting green, cafe and colourful flower beds. The area became overgrown for many years but it has been restored and is now the habitat of scores of interesting wild flowers and creatures.
The Isle of Wight Coastal Path passes through Flowers Brook Meadow, between Ventnor and Steephill Cove, a short walk west of Ventnor Beach, on the seaward side of Ventnor Park. It comprises large areas of mown grass with tarmac paths and benches, a wild flower meadow and a stream.
The steam that runs down one side comes from two springs that originated in the Downs of the Isle of Wight. These converge above Flowers Brook, creating a stream that flows east into a small pond, before continuing on down to the sea. There is a sweet little stone bridge, a stone seat and some stepping stones across the pond. The water is shallow and kids can paddle on a warm day.
There are easy tarmac paths around, plus you are free to walk across the mown grass. A number of wooden benches are dotted around so you can sit and admire the view of the sea and the bay of Ventnor.
In summertime you will see lots of native Pyramidal Orchids growing in the wild flower meadow.
It has a romantic, nostalgic air about it and the views up here are glorious. Stop and enjoy a picnic in the sunshine.
A short way along the path back towards Ventnor Bay are some steps that lead down to a small stoney beach.
