Sue completed an art and design foundation course at Middlesex Polytechnic, London in 1991. In 1995, she graduated with a BA (Hons) degree in 3D design specialising in ceramics from Middlesex University, London. In the year 2000, Sue participated in a residency at Quay Arts Centre on the Isle of Wight which saw the development of a tableware.
Sue’s multidisciplinary conceptual practice comprises stand-alone pieces, installation, film and tableware, collectively defined by a distinct language. Current work is rooted in traditional techniques, thrown forms made on the wheel, firing a real flame kilns and using natural wood ash deposits and the reduction flame to add unpredictable embellishment. Most notable recent developments have been to fire porcelain and stoneware pieces in the recently built wood-fired kiln. Sue uses the ash deposits to flow around the pieces with the flame to create individual patina during this 14 hour firing.
Over 20 years, Sue has built an international reputation across the UK, Europe, the US and Canada with work held in may private and museum collections. Sue is selected member of the Craft Potters Association and a member of Contemporary Applied Arts.
Sue is based at her home studio and also at Binnel Studios in St Lawrence.
Visiting Binnel Studios is by appointment, or invitation only.
